Have Siri Get To Know You

TecTip #65: If you have the iPhone 4S or 5: Tell Siri about who is who in your life, such as “Erin is my wife” or “Rick is my dad.” Then you can say “Text my wife” or “Call dad” and Siri knows who you mean. Also, be sure to enter your home and work addresses in Contacts. That way, Siri can remind you to do things when you leave or arrive at either place.

TCG Whats To Know: What Are Your Thoughts On "BYOD"?

“BYOD” (Bring Your Own Device) has become a popular trend in the business world. This trend has actually become a policy at many companies, such as RIM. The policy allows employees to use their personal devices such as smart phones, tablets and laptops for company use. This is a controversial policy because it allows employees to access privileged company information and resources on their personal devices, therefore arguably lessening the security of the data.

Some employers find this to be an attractive policy because it could lead to higher employee productivity due to their access to company resources outside of the office. Other employers take the stance of convenience; most employees already bring their personal devices to the office so this policy helps streamline the employees’ work flow. A main concern for employers enforcing such a policy is the security of the data. If a device is lost or stolen and the appropriate pass codes or locks are not in place then the company faces a huge threat. Employers must consider protective measures that benefit the company as well as the employees, if implementing such a program.

Companies and employees are questioning whether employees should be reimbursed for using their personal devices rather than the company’s. This policy would likely save the company money on buying and maintaining such devices, so should the employee be paid for usage fees? Another question surrounding this policy is how the employees can efficiently keep their personal data and resources separate from the company’s? Combining or complicating personal and work files could become disastrous for the employers and the employees.

Monday is Internet Doomsday, Are You Prepared?

Internet Doomsday

Be prepared this coming Monday July 9th because thousands of computer users infected with an undetected virus thus far, will loose their access to the internet. This virus is commonly known as the DNSChanger, because the virus redirects users to fake sites often leading to other internet problems.

 

Months ago, international hackers created a malicious software (malware) that infected approximately 4 million internet users. The hackers “took advantage of vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Windows operating system to install malicious software on the victims’ computers. This turned off antivirus updates and changed the way the computers reconcile website addresses behind the scenes on the Internet's domain name system” (The Huffington Post). Before the hackers were able to fully control the infected computers, they were arrested and the FBI set up a special safety net to prevent internet disruptions for those infected. The safety net has been in place about 8 months now and theFBI feels that has been enough time to spread the news and for infected users to detect the problem. The safety net is being shut down on July 9, 2012 and those still infected will face internet connection problems.

Most users have no idea they were infected and so it will appear as a large shock when they cannot connect to the internet on Monday.To identify whether you are infected or not and for further steps, please visit http://dcwg.org(the security partner of the FBI) or please contact us at 508-650-9917. The FBI provided form to determine if you are using the rogue DNS is here.
